Great ideas! Love the fact that you included the part About letting the child decide what to get rid of instead of just throwing it away. That has a lot more impact on a child’s life than a lot of people realize!

I recently downsized to a home that was half the size of the one I left and did not have the spacious 2-car garage I was used to. What did I learn? Things are just things and really bring no joy. Let go of things, and your life will be much neater and happier in the end.

Great tips! I’ve tried decluttering my house a lot the past year. When I get tired of an item (especially kitchen gadget), I ask friends if they are interested so it often finds a new home!

We’re in the process of moving to another country. As stressful as it is, we’ve found it’s really cathartic clearing out the house. Let stress with less clutter! Thanks for sharing these tips.

Thank you for the reminder to let go of the clutter in our lives. I like your idea of trading, it forces us to let go of the unnecessary items or avoid unnecessary purchases. Letting go requires forgiving our past mistakes or for giving away the source of a memory.

This is a really great list of tips. Over the last year or so, I have been decluttering our family home. It’s so interesting the reason why we keep things and the emotional attachments we create. I now teach my children that we clean our house to clear our minds.

Clutter is a constant struggle in my house. I still haven’t finished unpacking after moving 4 months ago and am thinking about just getting rid of entire boxes! Thanks for the tips and motivation, time to get at it!

Having lived a fairly minimal lifestyle in my youth I found children to be a bit of a game changer. It’s easy to accumulate STUFF. We solved this by giving the children a cardboard box each month for them to fill with unwanted items, these items go to a charity shop and they get to bring something new back. We also encourage them to save pocket money by giving them weekly interest on their cash. This way they save up for something special and don’t buy trash.

Decluttering is the best! I find that after decluttering even just parts of our house that new ideas come to me easily. I feel lighter overall. I still have more to do but I like decluttering. ๐Ÿ™‚

I think this post was so helpful! A lot of times I’ve seen posts about the need to get rid of clutter but not actually how to do it. I live in a small apartment so it’s necessary for me to make the most of my space and I know the only way to do that is get rid of clutter. I always find myself getting guilted into keeping things and I hate it. I’m going to have to learn how to say no. Thanks for these tips!

I think my clutter would look better in Waikiki! ๐Ÿ™‚
My main issue is paper — I am trying to be more organized with it and do something with it immediately instead of creating piles.

It is incredible what less clutter around you can do for the mind. You share some great tips here. I try my hardest to keep our home environment clear of clutter, organized, and neat. But, with 4 kids and a husband who is completely opposite it’s a daily challenge I sometimes fail at. It’s so healthy though to keep outside environments together in order to maintain an organized mind.
